The Freak has become an icon since its first launch in 2001. We were there and covered the event at Baselworld. The initial reaction was shock and awe. It's a watch from 2001 that was so different from the rest of the industry that its creators had to name it "The Freak." It's so weird. It has no dial, no hands, and the movement itself is designed as an hour and minute indicator. It has no crown, so time setting is by turning the sector bezel and winding by turning the back bezel. It was way ahead of its time. We reviewed the 10th Anniversary Freak back in 2013 when it was a hand-wound model, and in 2018 UN released the Freak Vision with the new Grinder automatic winding system.
Then in 2019, UN launched Freak X. It's considered an entry-level model, priced at a fraction of the Freak Vision's. However, many of the original iconic design details have changed. Gone are the quirky front and rear bezels. In its place was a centuries-old and very traditional crown. Gone is the apparent nipple on the sapphire glass that houses the pivot of the movement. Well, this bump on the glass disappeared after the first few years and was replaced by smooth glass, which was never the case with the Vision models. The automatic winding system of the grinding machine is installed in place. Some people hate Freak X. And many others were probably too young to experience the original Freak, but embraced it.

In this novel version, the Freak X has been updated and upgraded. The special feature of the new Freak is undoubtedly its enamel dial. A decorative technique that has been passed on and passed on from generation to generation of artisans; today, enamel is used only on watches produced by the most prestigious watchmakers. Considering the delicacy of the enameller in all his actions from preparing the enamel to applying it, this technique is rare throughout the process. Due to the talent, knowledge and experience it requires, only a handful of craftsmen can master it.
Ulysse Nardin's Donzé Cadrans Manufacture in Le Locle retains this exceptional expertise. This innovative dial is first treated with guilloché technique. Thanks to the realization of geometric lines, the application of this ancient technology brings a modern touch to the dial. This base is then painted with several coats of water-based enamel. In fact, the enamel is first crushed with a pestle and then the water is added. Several coats of color are dried in an oven at about 800 degrees, requiring only a minute of cooling between coats. Three to four coats of colored enamel and at least five oven cycles are required before the final coat of translucent enamel (called "fudge") is applied. This layer is crucial because the outcome of the process depends on it.

The Freak X Enamel Blue is equipped with an automatic movement, which is manually wound and set via the crown. The UN-230 Manufacture movement is equipped with a flying carrousel and rotates automatically once an hour to indicate the time. Both the balance wheel and the escapement are made of silicon, a technology that Ulysse Nardin has mastered since 2001.
