ALTO DE LANGLIRU, Spain -- Christopher Horner, an American cyclist who turns 42 next month, closed in on the biggest victory of his career Saturday by building his lead in the next-to-last stage of the Spanish Vuelta. Air Max 720 Prezzo Basso . Horner, who rides for RadioShack-Leopard, increased his lead from three to 37 seconds over Italys Vincenzo Nibali after the 20th stage. Horner shook off the Giro dItalia winner on the final surge up the foggy peak to end the grueling, 88-mile mountainous ride. "I dont need any time for it to sink in. I know what Ive done," Horner said. "I think everybody at home that was on the couch got to watch a legendary moment that maybe theyll never see again in their entire career. Maybe never again in sports, maybe never again in cycling will you see someone of my age win a grand tour." All that awaits Horner is Sundays last stage and the traditional arrival in Madrid. He collapsed to the ground after pedaling across the finish line in second place, 26 seconds after winner Kenny Elissonde of France. Horner had to be helped to his feet by race officials, and Nibali understood just how good his rival was this day. "I tried everything I could, but I couldnt do it," Nibali said. "It was impossible to shake Horner. I have to settle for second place, but I am not happy." Elissonde finished in 3 hours, 55 minutes, 36 seconds. The route started in Aviles and covered three major summits before ending at the Alto de LAngliru peak. "Its LAngliru, its mythical," Elissonde said. "This morning if youd have told me this I wouldnt believe it," Elissonde. The LAngliru summit was teeming with fans, many having camped out overnight to be there the next day to cheer the cyclists on their way up. Horner withstood Nibalis challenges on the ascent, the narrow mountain road crowded on both sides by raucous fans and thick fog limiting visibility. When the Astana rider apparently had spent all his energy, Horner pulled away using his high-riding stance. "That Nibali would put such an attack at the finish like that and make it so epic and unbelievable for the fans, to see him attack 10-15 times -- whatever it was -- Im sure the fans must have been on the edge of their seats every moment of it, of every pedal stroke that I did on the final climb," Horner said. Former winner Alejandro Valverde of Spain is set to finish third. The Movistar rider is 1:36 behind Horner, with Rodriguez a distant fourth at 3:22 back. "Horner was the strongest and we have to congratulate him for the victory," Valverde said. "His performances surprised us at the beginning, but not now." Air Max 720 Offerta . After deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league would consider pulling out of Sochi if something "significant" happens before players arrive, those set to participate are trying not to worry about that scenario. Les Elephants got their group-stage campaign off to a flying start with a 2-1 victory over Japan, but suffered a setback on Thursday with a 2-1 loss to group-leaders Colombia at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia. The Ivory Coast managed to keep Colombia off the score sheet in the first half, but they couldnt hold them off in the second half as goals from James Rodriguez and Juan Fernando Quintero scored to lift Los Cafeteros to the victory. Colombia struck for the opener in the 64th minute as a corner kick from Juan Guillermo Cuadrado was expertly nodded into the top left corner of the net by Rodriguez. Colombia doubled its advantage in the 70th minute following a giveaway from the Ivory Coast in the center of the park. Gutierrez advanced the ball and slid a well-weighted pass into the path of Quintero, who slotted a left-footed shot past the on-rushing Boubacar Barry. Ivory Coast pulled one back just three minutes later. It was Gervinho who did the honors, capping a weaving run from the left flank by pumping a right- footed shot past Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina at the near post. But it wasnt enough as Les Elephants could not find an equalizer. "We didnt deserve to lose, I feel a draw would have been fair," Ivory Coast coach Sabri Lambouchi said. "We made a few untimely errors and paid a heavy price. Air Max Outlet. Im not going to get too carried away with what went on, there are only some small things to iron out ahead of the next game. Well now go back to our camp and get plenty of rest, because well need to beat Greece by a big margin. I cant see us qualifying any other way." Greece, meanwhile, is coming off a scoreless draw against Japan in Natal at the Estadio das Dunas on Thursday. A win for the Greeks would keep them alive for a spot in the round-of-16 with four points, but they could still go home if Japan beats Colombia earlier in the day. The run of play in Thursdays affair was even until the 38th minute when Greece had Kostas Katsouranis sent off for a second caution, which came by way of a sliding challenge on Makoto Hasebe. But the Greeks almost took the lead shortly after when Vasilis Torosidis took a failed clearance and hammered a shot on goal, but goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima was equal to the task, turning the attempt out of play to deny the Roma man. "We struggled to even get close to the Japanese box, particularly in the first half. Thats why I feel we played really well in the second 45 minutes," Greek head coach Fernando Santos said. "We thought Japan might change their style and play more long balls, rather than always playing short passes. We now need to win our next game because Cote dIvoire have three points and weve just one. We need to find a way to put the Ivorians under pressure. I hope that everything turns out like Euro 2004, when Greece also needed to win their last [group] game and ended up going through." ' ' ' |
